Wadsworth Spurs on Deadly Davenham to County Cup Win
With Davenham fans scattered all over Greater Manchester, a bumper crowd eventually gathered for Davenhams debut game at County level.A late pitch inspection gave the go ahead on what turned out to be the smallest pitch ever. But credit to Steve and the Spurley Hey squad for getting the game on following plenty of pre match ground work.
Davenham adjusted their formation to 4:3:3 as there would be no space on the flanks to use their usual pacey wing play. The lads adapted immediately to the new formation and put Spurley under pressure from the off. Drinkwater and Whitney went close before Shaw unleashed a defence splitting ball for the speedy Kennerley to beat the keeper to the ball and lob an opener for the Goldmen. 1:0 to the Davenhamers and their county cup encounter was well and truly opened. The size and state of the pitch meant that it was difficult for the Goldmen to get much pass and move play to their game, but they did look dangerous in their attacking play. Spurley looked to take advantage from their long throws, looking to get the ball into the penalty area at every opportunity. After 22 minutes, Spurley rattled the crossbar, and then moments later, Davenham were caught napping. Spurley broke through the middle of the field, and a courageous last ditch tackle from Wadsworth deflected a freak goal which looped over the stranded Wallwork (think Paul Parker for England vs. Germany at 1990 world cup). Davenham hit straight back, with Drinkwater firing a low drive inches past the keepers far post. Rogerson entered the game and made an immediate impact. After 35 minutes, Wadsworth slotted in a great ball to Rogerson who squared to Kennerley for an excellent team goal. 2:1 to the Goldmen. The three man centre midfield of Kirkness, Dufty and Shaw settled into the game and by the time half time arrived the defence of Hill, Antrobus, Heaword and Wadsworth looked to be well in control. At half time the coaching team, requested a little more tempo in the Davenham attacking play and a little more fight in the middle of the park to win the ball; the Goldmen did not disappoint. Whitney went desperately close with a well taken shot, before Kennerley bagged his hatrick for a third game on the run. Superb play Taylor, youve been magnificent over the last few games.
Sensing a comfortable victory, Davenham continued to make all the positive play and forced numerous corners. A curling Kennerley corner found man mountain Shaw at the back post, leaving Shaw free to power home a bullet header for the second game in a row. 4:1. Davenham once more used all five substitutes and maintained their dominance. Wadsworth, who had a cracking game, both in midfield and defence, let fly with a powerful strikeinches wide, Kirkness sprinted beyond the Spurley defence but was unable to beat the keeper, both Forster and Rogerson went close too. However, it was the magnificent Wadsworth who found Rogerson with an outstanding pass, leaving Rogerson to round the keeper and fire home Davenhams fifth.
And so, Davenham clinched a nice 5:1 away victory and progress into the last 32 in Cheshire well done boys. Wadsworth took MOTM for his workrate, tackling but most of all his quality on the ball nice one Georgie.
And finally, special mention to Spurley who were great hosts. The bacon butties were most welcome and we wish our Stockport hosts, Bev, Steve and Spurley families the very best for the rest of the season. Also it's worth noting how fantasic the young referee was - a 100 / 100 score from the Davenham coaching staff. Great work ref.
MOTM: Wadsworth
Assists: Shaw, Rogerson, Kennerley, Wadsworth
Clean Sheets: Stitch, Greenwood, Burrows
Finally, special mention to the Hodnetts who travelled to watch the game, even though Liam wasn't selected - great support of the team folks!
