Congleton Rovers (3:6) Davenham FC (Kennerley (3), Hodnett, Dufty, Rogerson)
.we all follow the Davenham, onto victory. So the Goldmen notched up their first win in Division One with a nice victory against newly promoted Congleton Rovers. Those supporting the Friday training session wouldve seen fresh impetus in the pass and move, especially the off the ball work and to their credit the lads took on this improvement from the whistle. With barely 2 minutes on the clock, the lively Kennerley burst past the defence to slip an accurately placed shot into the bottom corner. 1:0 to the Davenhamers. Davenham looked full of energy as Shaw and Kirkness pulled the strings in midfield. In fact the whole team, looked to get the ball on the floor and play football at every opportunity.Great work down the right flank as the impressive Heaword played in Hodnett who shared a good exchange with Kennerley, who was brought to the floor. PENALTY! But unfortunately, the referee judged the freekick to be inches outside the box, with the freekick despatched just over the crossbar. Rogerson provided plenty of running down the left wing and can be very pleased with his contribution over the last few games and training in particularly great work Joe. Davenham continued to apply the pressure and following a Whitney corner, a little head on from Rogerson, before Kennerley smashed a powerful header into the back of the net. 2:0 and the Goldmen were flying.High fives all round, Davenham united!! Congleton continued to battle hard and had a half chance blasted over the bar, but by enlarge the defensive quartet of Burrows, Hill, Whitney and Heaword looked very commanding, snuffing out all attacks from the home boys. Kennerley went close with an acrobatic scissors kick, before adding a third from the spot; He later released Hodnett with an audacious flick, who in turn showed great pace before smashing Davenhams fourth beyond the Congleton keeper. 4:0 to the Davenhamers and half time.
Half time called for the lads to maintain their momentum, and keep the two banks of four solid as Congleton were expected to bring the game on to the away team.
Shaw, who was providing the heartbeat to the side, but struggling with injury, retired from the game and this proved to be a huge loss to Davenham. Congleton immediately capitalized with a player prodding home from the far post. However Davenham continued to work at their pass and move game. The boys werent able to keep the tempo throughout the second half but the bumper away crowd was entertained by the lads playing good football in patches. All substitutes brought fresh momentum to the team and the popular Matty Dufty scored what was to be the goal of the game with an outstanding curling shot from distance. Well done Matty, youve been brilliant of late!!! Unfortunately Congleton caught Davenham with another sucker punch from 30 yards which caught Greenwood stranded in goals. The game wasnt dead at 5:3. Wadsworth and Stitch played some beautiful football from the back before Wadsworth hit a firm drive just wide; Likewise, Drinkwater went close with an overhead kick. However, it was the in form Rogerson who hit the sixth goal for Davenham and it was just reward for a tireless performance.
All in all, it was a useful 3 points for the team, but even more important was the bouncbackability of the Goldmen -united both on and off the pitch. The team used five substitutes today but were able to keep pushing forward and generally looked the more dangerous of the two sides, throughout the entire match.
Best of luck to Rovers who never gave up; Davenham now head into an away match at Frodsham and look to be ready for the battle ahead well done today boys, proud of you all.
