A Whitney inspired performance saw Davenham overcome a stubborn Congleton to go three points clear at the top of the league.
Played in cold, blustery conditions, in front of a near full house at the Moss Farm Arena, Davenham made the most of the tail wind. With Congleton camped out in their half, it was only a matter of time before Rogerson burst the onion bag with a thumping header, from a Hill corner.Davenham couldve scored further first half goals with Wadsworth, Rogerson, Heaword and Kennerley all going close. It was however, just reward when Kennerley cleverly scored an excellent individual goal, to take the Goldmen into the break at 2:0 up.
The game was far from over, and playing into the wind, the message from the dugout called for work rate, patience and discipline. .....and tactically, trying to keep the ball on the floor and pass behind the opposition defence.
Congleton played their way back into the game and following alleged contact in the box, were awarded a penalty which was coolly despatched. At 2:1 up, it was definitely game on, and to add to Davenhams woes, key players, Drinkwater, Kennerley and Wadsworth were forced to retire through injury. However, cometh the hour cometh the man.Whitters ensured Davenham kept up their 100% winning ways with a commanding performance in midfield. He ensured a lively spell from Congleton was halted with a well taken drive into the bottom corner. 3:1 and the excellent scoring streak from Luke continues. A huge relief from the sideline and fresh impetus inspired into the Davenham machine. Full force Forster bolstered the attack and it was just reward, when he won the ball and played an inch perfect pass for Heaword who rounded off an excellent performance with a well taken goal. At 4:1 up, it was game over for Congleton.
Whitney took the MOTM but there was special praise today for the four substitutes who came off the bench and not only maintained the momentum but added to the Davenham cause great work, Haz, Alex, Matty and Dan were proud of you all. Lets also not forget that now famous defence of Wallwork, Greenwood, Hill and Burrows.....................and finally good luck for the Congleton team, who definitely played their part in a well contested, yet sporting encounter.
