Davenham Take the Beautiful Game to Barnton

Barnton (0:4) Davenham Dynamoes  (Kennerley (2), Wadsworth, Stitch)

On a beautiful crisp October morning the Dynamoes Dream team received a warm welcome from a very sporting Barnton. With Hill returning from representing the Mid Cheshire district side (great work Sammy were so proud of you!) and Hamilton-Greenwood returning from an extreme camping trip (and 25 minutes sleep!), Davenham expected a tough match and werent disappointed. Supported by an injured Rogerson who came along to cheer the boys on, the gold and black machine set about their task, where only 3 points was going to be good enough.

There were early half chances for both teams before the first quality football of the day was provided by the visitors. Davenham worked a corner and following a half clearance from Barnton, Antrobus curled in an inch perfect curling cross, which found Stitch at the back post. The Davenham forward leapt highest to direct a perfect header into the bottom corner. 1:0 to the Davenhamers! The goal was particularly pleasing and it contained a number of phases which were practiced at Fridays training. Drinkwater really had the bit between his teeth and looked to power past the Barnton defence on numerous occasions. Wadsworth played in an excellent defence splitting pass to Drinkwater who used his pace and power to good effect, crossing for Kennerley who was unlucky with a shot which tore into the side netting.  Barnton remained dangerous and the defensive quartet of Burrows, Hill, Antrobus and Whitney had to be alert to contain the attacks. In fact they didnt miss a header all day. Burrows played in Heaword who in turn played a good ball to Kennerley to allow the golden boot contender to round the last defender before being felled as he headed goal bound. Penalty came the shout from the visitors stand and the referee immediately pointed to the spot. Kennerley stepped up and thumped a perfect penalty into the bottom corner, 2:0, howay the lads! Davenham continued to put Barnton under pressure a Whitney freekick was well saved and both Stitch and Kirkness worked themselves into good shooting positions but couldnt quite get their shots away.  Having caught up on sleep, Hamilton-Greenwood joined the game and made an immediate impact down the right flank. he just gets better and better came the shout from the travelling army. And so, 2:0 it remained until half-time, but the game was certainly still alive. The team talk called for concentration, composure on the ball and for a little more competitiveness as Barnton was winning the lions share of the 50-50 tackles.

Drinkwater started the second half as he had played the first with a high energy display, before Kennerley scored yet another wonder goal. Following yet further good play from Forster, Lonsdale and Heawood, Kennerley bust into the penalty box and looked to drill a left foot shot. Instead he turned inside his marker, then beat a further two defenders (think Ricky Villa goal) before despatching a shot beyond the Barnton stopper.  3:0 to the Davenham and the game now looked beyond the home boys.  As per usual Davenham used their full squad to good effect and further team changes continued to bring further chances. Wadsworth picked up the ball in midfield and hit an excellent left footer from 25 yards which dipped over the bar. Forster and Lonsdale continued to demonstrate great passing down the left flank and on numerous occasions Lonsdale overlapped to provide quality strikes and passes from the left. Drinkwater sprinted past the Barnton defence, only to see his shot go agonisingly inches wide. If anyone deserved a goal today it was Drinkwater. Kirkness dragged a shot wide and Joe Heaword followed up moments later with a quality strike which was miraculously tipped over the bar, leaving the little magician holding his head in his hands in disbelief. Big Sammy Antrobus powered a header inches over the bar, and just when it looked like there would be no further goals, Wadsworth let fly with his third attempt at goal from distance. Im not sure youll see a sweeter strike as the ball rocketed into the top corner from 25 yards, leaving the Davenham midfielder to turn to his supporters who had made the journey from Laurel Close. 4:0 and the second wonder goal of the match and most importantly a valuable 3 points and an excellent score line for the men in gold and black and the end to a beautiful mornings football.

Drinkwater took MOTM for his unselfish play and high energy performance and special mention to the Barnton set up for such a warm, sporting welcome. At Davenham we have nothing but praise for Rob and the club and wish them the very best for the rest of the season......and finally a huge well done to the ref who had a very good game and praised both sides for such an enjoyable match.
