Winsford Junior Blues 5 : 6 Davenham (following Penalty shootout)

The first trip of the season to mighty rivals Winsford in the League Cup did not disappoint. Yet again did this clash captivate all players, parents and coaches alike. Never a dull moment between these two sides saw once again a very close affair. Possession swung back and forth all through the game, both sides flexing their muscles. It was the Davenham goldmen that struck first early on in the 1st Half courtesy of a Whitney corner, met by a towering header from Hill which dropped into the path of the poaching Shaw, 0:1. Like last season's final day encounter our 1 goal advantage stood firm for nearly the whole game thanks to brilliant defending and some outstanding saves from Wallwork, however we were undone late on in the game when Winsford drew level 1:1. Huge disappointment on the Davenham touchline, so close. So this early season League Cup clash had to go into Extra Time and it was Winsford who scored again 2:1, the game looking like it would now slip away from Davenham. However, there is alot of belief and togetherness with the Davenham team and not giving up forced more pressure on the Winsford defence, a push in the box was spotted by the Referee. Huge noise and pressure engulfed the arena, but Kennerley did not flinch and cool as you like slotted home the equaliser 2:2  (and the hitman's 10th goal of the season). There were late chances from both teams to wrap up the game late on in Extra time, but inevitably, this game needed a dramatic Penalty shootout to decide the winner. Kennerley went first and set the scene slotting in the corner, Whitney was 2nd up and did not disappoint, Dufty pen was saved by a very able Winford keeper, before Antrobus put us back on track with a hard and low shot, just under the cross bar !! Burrows converted our 5th pen. Wallwork was once again in great form and had already secured MOTM before saving a penalty and leaving Winsford having to score their 5th pen, the pressure was too much and the Winsford No.7 missed the target. Davenham players and touchline erupted after securing a hard fought 5:6 Win. Wallwork took MOTM, but there were many excellent performances throughout the team. The whole team were needed and all played their part, we always wanted to play football and do the right thing, brilliant behaviour from the boys in a very intimidating atmosphere. Well Done All.

Goals; Kennerley (2), Shaw, Whitney, Antrobus, Burrows

MOTM; Wallwork

Assists; Whitney, Hill
