Davenham kicked off their U15s campaign with a enthralling win at home to established 1st Division Side Middlewich. Nine months previously, Middlewich beat Davenham 3:2 in the cup and another close, sporting encounter was envisaged by both teams. Davenham started the friendly with intent and put Middlewich under sustained pressure before the Witches hit Davenham on the counter attack to go one-nil up.
Davenham hit back following great work down the right flank between Kennerley and the in-form Hodnett. Drinkwater overlapped and popped a well drilled goal into the bottom corner. 1:1 and game on. Davenham continued to press with the Middlewich keeper making several really outstanding saves, most notably from a Kennerley volley and a Hodnett drive. Unfortunately for the goldmen, once more uncertainty in defence let in the visitors, 1:2.
Following half time, with Davenham having the majority of the play in the opening 40 minutes, Middlewich started to dictate more of the play and a nicely taken third goal ensured Middlewich commanded a 3:1 lead.
However, Davenham have great strength of character and struck back with four goals in the last 20 minutes. A well placed Whitney double, a Kennerley header, a Rogerson drive, with the impressive Drinkwater providing three assists.
This was a good victory for Davenham, not only for the win but also for dominating large sections of the game and can count themselves unlucky not to have scored more goals; It has to be said that the Middlewich keeper was simply quite outstanding!!!!
MOTM went to Hodnett, whos wing play, pace and delivery had the Davenham faithful continually on their toes. Likewise Drinkwater and Shaw had superb matches well played boys!! Thanks to Nathan and the Middlewich Families for the usual good game!
