The Davenham Dreamteam started the Mid Cheshire League Cup Semi Final as underdogs against the reigning Cheshire Cup Winners, Witton Albion. Having already bagged one Mid Cheshire Final, Witton currently lie second in the 1st division with an excellent record to date including: -
10 goals knocked past 1st Division Middlewich
7 goals scored against 1st Division Frodsham
8 goals past 2nd Division favourites Winsford Junior Blues
9:0 vs 1st Division Egerton Tatton
3:0 vs Winnington, 3rd place in the 1st Division
We could be forgiven for thinking we may be up against it, but lets not discount the never say die attitude, courage and team spirit which resonates right through the whole Davenham squad. The game started as expected with Witton rampaging forward, but Davenham had a game plan and with discipline and confidence the Goldmens defence held strong. Davenham had a couple of half chances with the visitors stopper making a good double save from Rogerson and Kennerley. Davenham absorbed more pressure before Rogerson hit Witton on the break to slot a lovely goal into the back of the net, sending the Moss Farm faithful into raptures. 1:0 to the Davenhamers and that is how it remained until HT. The message at half time was to carry on with the same approach, and expect the Witton fullbacks to advance allowing us to find space behind their defence.
The clock ticked down and it wasnt until 50 minutes that Witton hit a great long range shot which struck the underside of the bar to equalise. 1:1. Davenham responded with an excellent scissors kick from Stitch............................just believe boys!! Unfortunately endeavour and lady luck wasnt quite enough on the day and Witton hit a winner from a disputed free kick and despite the Davenham outfit giving everything right to the end of the game, Witton went on to claim their 2nd Mid Cheshire final of the season.
Davenham had many heroes on the pitch today, and if football was measured in terms of endeavour and team spirit, the Mid Cheshire League cup would already have gold and black ribbons on it.
So, we may have lost the game, but in many ways we felt like winners today and the management hope we can take the many positives from the cup run into our final 5 league matches, starting with 3rd place, Congleton next Sunday.
Hilly was so courageous today, a great performance, while Joe Rog and Louie Greenwood shared the MOTM for sheer guts and determination.
Danno, Buzzer, Sammy Vidic, Hilly, Waddy, Louie, Whitters, Disco, Stitchy, TJ, Drinky, Joe Rog, Al and Danny Full Force, were so proud of each of you............................lets also not forget the Hitman who returns next week from watching Liverpool lift the Carling Cup.
Finally, good luck to Alan, Ian and the Witton Camp for an enjoyable, successful final from everyone at Davenham.
