Goaltastic Davenham Go Six Points Clear at the Top Sandbach Eagles (0:15) Davenham Dynamoes (Kennerley (5), Hill (2), Heaword (2), Antrobus (2), Kirkness, Whitney, Stitch, Own Goal) Conscious that Sandbach recently struck five goals past Cuddington, Davenham took a full squad to the Wheelock Arena. The visitors celebrated a return to league football following the festive break, with an emphatic win away at Sandbach Eagles, which takes them six points clear at the top of the league. Inspired by a super performance from Alex Lonsdale, the Davenham Hotshots have now scored an incredible 32 goals in their last 3 league matches.
From the first whistle, the goldmen took the game to the hosts and with an attacking force of Heaword, Kennerley, Kirkness and Rogerson, the Mid Cheshire visitors looked hungry for goals, with Hilly and Drinky providing the muscle and distribution in midfield. It wasnt long before Joe Rog headed inches over, before Heaword floated in a well taken corner, just behind the Sandbach line and with Kennerley and Rogerson pouncing, a luckless Sandbach defender was only able to steer the ball past his own stopper. 1:0 to the Davenhamers!
There was no complacency amongst the boys (nor the Davenham coaching staff) and Wadsworth took a quick thrown-in, catching the Sandbach guard, off-guard, which allowed The Hitman, Hazzer Kirkness to float in an absolute peach of a cross for Joe Heaword to plant a firm header past the Sandbach keeper. It was still early in the match, but the Davenham maestros were playing with a real verve inevitably Kennerley, not wanting to miss out on the scoring, struck a daisy-cutter into the bottom corner. 3:0 and coasting. Relishing his midfield role, Hilly pounced on a loose ball in the centre of the park and launched a Hilly special which landed straight into the top corner. Moments later, an identical goal and Hilly had claimed a superb 1st half brace the gold machine was now truly in top gear and 5:0 up. The goals continued to fly in and with the defensive quartet of Antrobus, Lonsdale, Buzzer Burrows and Wadsworth holding their position well, Danny Wallwork was limited to a single goalkick and plenty of encouragement. The first half finished 9:0 and with the game effectively over, the message was all about continuing to be respectful, play decent "pass and move" football and to keep the shape for the good of the team.
With a change in playing personnel the game carried on in very much the same manner, with solid defending from Danny Forster. Stitchy continued to look lively and added a lovely header, before the fantastic Luke Whitney wrapped his foot around the ball to curl a top corner beauty 11 nil. Lukes distribution was once more excellent, especially from the deadball and it was no surprise he went on to create 3 assists (as did TJ). Big Sammy Vidic moved to a more advanced role and was rewarded for his hard work with a second half brace one a free kick from 30 yards. Davenham made good use from Louie Greenwords long throws and with minutes left Danny Wallwork made two outstanding saves, which were testament to the Sandbach Heroes sticking to the task to the end. However, too little too late and the referee blew to bring to an end a 15:0 victory to the visitors.
The Roving Reporter went scrambling for the record books a record 15:0 victory for Davenham, 8 different scorers, 18 goals in 4 matches for the Kennerley / Kirkness strike force (5 more today, taking Taylor to 32 for the season) but most importantly 3 more points for the league leadersand last but not least a special mention for Tony and the Sandbach boys who continue to provide a sporting welcome; unfortunately today they met a Davenham side in full flight.
