Grappenhall (1:4) Davenham

Lets All 'av a Disco!!

Grappenhall (1:4) Davenham (Kirkness (2), Kennerley, Heaword)

This weeks report is dedicated to TJ, Big Al and Dom the loyal supporters to the roving reporter!)

This weeks league game was away at Grappenhall and without wanting to reel out too many clichés the men in Gold and Black knew that there arent too many easy games at this level and with tough games ahead only three points would be good enough. The gaffer demanded 110% from the Davenham Dream team.

Grappenhall laid out their stall early and with little composure from either team, the opening minutes were very scrappy, with the usually reliant Gold boys guilty of school boy defending.  The only highlight for Davenham was a well struck shot from Kennerley which was probably hit too well, testing the home team stopper. The talk on the visitors touchline agreed that the game needed a goal.  With 15 minutes gone, they weren't disappointed. Wadsworth took a throw in to Stitch who leapt like a salmon to nod onto Kennerley who pinged it on a sixpence, early doors and the ball rocketed into the top corner. 1:0 to the Davenhamers.

Grappenhall hit back with a strike which gathered pace on the wet surface, forcing a save right out of the top drawer from Greenwood. The little magician, Disco-Heaword continued to cause Grappenhall big problems with quality attacking play and was unlucky not to notch a goal early on.

Then after 15 minutes with both teams still not quite in the groove, Kennerley sustained a horrific injury which held up play for some time.  This resulted in the talismanic attacking midfielder being taken straight to hospital and left the away team followers in shock. <Good luck TJ, take care, we were all relieved to see you released after a lengthy visit to A&E!!!>.

The game restarted with composure needed. Despite the Davenham attackers (time after time after time after time again) holding a good five yards in front of the defensive line, the call of "offside referee" echoed around Stockton Lane,  and the calls were strengthened by the referee's whistle. However, Rogerson took the initiative and sprayed a neat ball to Heaword who disco danced past his marker before nailing the second goal for Davenham - that one was for you TJ!! 2:0! Heaword continued to run his socks off, and inspired his team mates by taking the game to Grappenhall.  Whitters and The Hitman started to stamp their authority on the game and find Drinkwater and Stitch with ease as the Davenham Hotshots started to squeeze the home boys.  It was no surprise that Kirkness reacted quickest to a half clearance from Grappenhall and rifled a third goal for Davenham. If a Brazilian had scored that goal, we'd all have been raving about it for days. Wadsworth and Burrows continued to provide quality defending and distribution down the flanks, but despite a few half chances, there were no further first half goals.

At half time, we agreed as a team that we could do more and importantly we'd do our talking on the pitch for TJ, Davenham and Queen and Country!! Hill proved to be a real mountain in midfield and Davenham looked for a fourth. Rogerson and Heaword both went close. Likwise Hill worked himself into good shooting positions. Lonsdale demonstrated his cultured left foot with some really nice football from the back and" Full Force Forster" continued to shore up his flank with no nonsense defending.  Hamilton-Greenword launched his usual throws into the danger area, with Heaword and Drinkwater connecting with good headers at goal. Unfortunately a further big game player retired (although briefly) from the fray, this time Kirkness with a neck injury requiring healing hands from Tracey "healing hands" Kirkness. The half chance s continued to come and with the Hitman returning it wasnt long before the big guy nailed his brace and Davenhams fourth! 4:0 and game over. Whitters added to the attack and showed great feet to beat the attack before delivering a punishing shot well saved by the Grappenhall Keeper.  At 4:0 the game fizzled out a bit and with minutes left the Gold men were left reeling with a conceded penalty. To everyones amazement the referee consulted the home touchline and promptly pointed to the penalty spot. A great penalty was confidently despatched past Wallwork who had a comfortable game in goal. It was probably a justified strike for Grappenhall who stuck to their game plan throughout the 70 minutes.

The final whistle went and with eight out of eight league wins, the business end of the season is just around the corner.  Interviewed after the game, (the gaffer was unavailable for interview) Jason Antrobus  faced the cameras, "he most important thing today was the three points. With tough games ahead, were confident...........................We are Davenham and I am Jason Antrobus...............Cmon the Dynamoes!"

Assists: Rogerson, Stitch

MOTM: Heaword

Clean Sheets: Greenwood, Burrows, Hill
