Davenham welcomed Sandbach Eagles to the Moss Farm arena. The team talk was all about, keeping a discipline in formation and to play the easy ball, while maintaining a high tempo to unsettle the visitors; and to be fair this is exactly how the mighty gold men started. Into the wind, Heaword and Wadsworth both enjoyed good progress down the flanks with Kennerley, Whitney and Drinkwater all going close with half chances.Sustained pressure saw the ball break to Heaword on the edge of the box, and he didnt disappoint the bumper home crowd as his goal bound rocket of a shot was blocked. The ball fell to Whitney who poked the ball inches wide.Drinkwater looked to pick up from where he left off against Northwich as he burst beyond the opposition defence. Bearing down on goal, he unselfishly passed to striking partner Stitch; Unfortunately Matty couldnt convert on this occasion. Chance after chance went begging; before a perfect Heawood corner found the head of Kennerley who went on to bundle the ball over the line. Goooal!!!l...............however, the celebrations were short-lived as the referee ruled that there had been an infringement. Kennerley and Heawood had further good chances however, inches wide on all occasions. The minutes seemed to fly by as Davenham dominated the play; however the story of the day was all about the unconverted chances. The gold machine was playing well, with Whitney leading the midfield and encouraging Kirkness, Wadsworth and Heaword to spray the ball forward. In defence Hill, Burrows, Lonsdale and Antrobus quelled the odd Sandbach attack and Hill in particular once more impressed with his distribution and delivery from the deadball. The first half remained goalless, which prompted for a little more composure, no panicking and most of all to be confident in playing pass and move football................because that is what would provide the goals. It was positive that so many chances had been created in the first 35 minutes.
Come the second half, the great delivery (Hill and Heawood) continued from the corners, and disappointedly a Hill delivery rolled inches past the far post, which shouldve been attacked by at least two players. However, it was from a corner that the Davenham supremos caused more chaos and not for the first time this season, Kirkness leapt like a salmon to head the opener. 1:0 Get in, Hazzer! quickly followed by a sigh of relief from the touchline and more importantly quickly followed by a second as Kennerley won an awkward ball before bundling past his marker before driving into the corner of the goal, past the keeper (2:0), who had a very good game throughout the match. Further chances went missing with both Heaword and Stitch unable to convert in front of goal. Joe had an awesome game and seemed to beat the Sandbach defence at will. It was one of his mazy, tireless runs which set up Kirkness for his second headed goal of the match. Great stuff boys, and a renewed confidence were now injected into the gold supremos, typified by glorious footwork from Stitchy the entertainer. Kennerley added a fourth sprinting beyond Sandbach before slotting into the corner and the impressive Whitney drove a very good 5th from the edge of the box, which was the icing on the cake for the Davenham guvnor, who controlled the midfield from the first whistle.Still the chances came and went a Kennerley freekick inches wide, and a Kirkness freekick which Davenham shouldve made more of. Finally Drinkwater scored and what a really nice finish it was too. Thats 4 goals in 3 games for the Davenham powerhouse. On this occasion he muscled past his marker and smashed a great goal into the corner of the goal. 6:0 to the Davenhamers and that is how it remained. The div two leaders settled to keep the defensive play tight with Forster and Kennerley stiffening up the defence and with Hilly proving to boss the midfield. For the second week running it was impossible to nominate an out and out winner of the coveted MOTM trophy but Heaword and Whitney who were head and shoulders above their peers, shared the accolade with both players demonstrating great energy, strength and quality on the ball.
Considering all 19 Mid Cheshire U14s teams, only Davenham and Egerton can boast a 100% start to the season - C'mon the Dynamoes!!!
